Do you want to know how to tell if someone has short term memory loss?

Many thousands of people across the globe are forced to deal with short term memory problems and, in fact, most people have to deal with the problem at some point in their lives. This is normal. However, if memory loss starts to interfere with your day-to-day life then you should consider getting some help or taking action.

If you are frightened that your forgetfulness is a sign of more serious short term memory problems then there are a few things you are going to want to do. Firstly, take a memory test, which will ask a variety of questions to which you answer. The basic point here is to find out if you do have a memory problem and if so how severe it actually is.

After the Test

Once you have completed the test, if the results show that you do have a memory problem you have to start from here in terms of dealing with it. The first is to determine what type of memory loss you are experiencing. Consider whether or not your memory loss is disrupting your day to day living, how often your memory lapses occur, what kinds of things you forget, and whether there are signs of confusion.

You should also determine what the causes of your memory loss are if you can. Medications are often a cause of short term memory problems, and examples of medications that can interfere with memory include over-the-counter and prescription sleeping pills and anti-anxiety medications.

Stress is also a major cause of memory loss, as is head injury, sleep deprivation, thyroid dysfunction, nutritional deficiencies, dementia, alcohol and illicit drug use, depression, and infections.

Also remember that short term memory problems can often be a sign of something much more serious, such as Alzheimer’s. It is therefore very important, even if you do take steps towards improving your memory, that you get in to see your doctor in order to have yourself checked out and make sure that nothing more serious is going on.

Most likely your doctor will perform several examinations and tests in order to rule out a more serious condition such as Alzheimer’s or some other form of dementia. If you feel that you (or someone you know) may be suffering from this condition, it is important not to panic or get too frustrated but take steps towards keeping your health in prime condition and seek appropriate professional help.
